Originally built in 1842 as a private residence, this legendary landmark is a hotel of unrivaled opulence and is steeped in the city's history. Having recently undergone a lavish renovation project that cost over 70 million and took two years to complete, the hotel has been restored to its former glory and the hand-carved architectural details, glittering gold-leaf meander motif, elegant ionic columns and fine antiques evoke its original 19th century grandeur. Centrally located on Syntagma Square, the Hotel Grande Bretagne has seen the world's most famous personalities walk through its doors. The 321 rooms and suites combine opulence with sophisticated technology, a happy marriage most clearly seen in the Royal and Presidential suites (400 and 160 generous square meters respectively), both of which surpass all previous notions of luxury. A private steam room, gym, fireplace, dining room and even a wine cellar are among the amenities of these indulgent suites. Some of the standard rooms have small balconies and are not as spacious, but boast the same luxurious décor and mod cons. Wander into the winter garden with its lofty stained glass-ceiling, palm trees and winged bronze statues for a suitably decadent atmosphere in which to have brunch or a very British afternoon tea, or quaff a cocktail in the Alexander Bar, named for the hand-made 18th-century tapestry depicting Alexander the Great on one of his exploits. Here you can pair a Grand Reserve cognac or vintage port with a cigar from the walk-in humidor. Diners can opt for one (or more) of four venues: the brasserie-style GB Corner with its Mediterranean cuisine, a favorite haunt of ministers and high-profile businessmen; the roof garden, offering similar fare along with breathtaking views of the Parthenon; the exclusive dining space in the Churchill Room (named after the man himself who stayed here on several occasions); or a monastery table in the Cellar, amidst the 2,600 bottles that make up the hotel's wine collection. Afterwards, guests can take a plunge in the pool or relax in one of the city's best spas, because too much of everything is just enough... If you look at the Pictures of Grande Bretagne Hotel you will realize that Grande Bretagne is one of the most special Athens Luxury Hotels. |
